Student Nurse Externship Program

Program Overview

As a nursing student, you can start your journey to a fulfilling career in health care! Our Student Nurse Externship program is designed to offer 1:1 clinical training with experienced health care providers while creating a pathway for student nurses to gain experience in inpatient and specialty areas. Through hands-on practice, participants will enhance their nursing and clinical skills such as IV starts, wound care, catheter care, sterile technique, and more. The program also focuses on expanding knowledge of hospital practice and policy, resulting in increased confidence to provide patient care.

Program Objectives

Demonstrate competency in performing patient assessments
Practice nursing skills within scope of Acute Care role with supervision of RN Preceptor OR practice nursing and sterile environment skills within scope of Surgical Services role with supervision of a Preceptor
Participate as a member of the health care team to support a multidisciplinary plan of care
Demonstrate professional growth to support transition to a RN after graduation

Program Expectations

The RN Preceptor will be responsible for patient care since they're the licensed professional and the Student Nurse Extern is still in nursing school. A Scope of Skills document will be provided on the unit, which includes a list of skills and level of RN observation required for each. Below outlines the three levels of RN supervision:
