STL Patient Care Tech Training Program
Program Overview 

SSM Health partners with local colleges to provide qualified individuals with the opportunity to attend training and upon successful completion of the program, start working as a full-time Patient Care Tech (PCT). The accelerated training program combines online classroom instruction, hands-on skill labs and on-the-job training in a clinical practice to prepare you for a career in patient care. The training satisfies the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services requirements for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). 

Program Objectives


  • Learn how to work collaboratively as a member of a health care team
  • Apply effective communication and ethical principles when interacting with patients, families, and colleagues  
  • Implement infection control and safety measures 
  • Provide personal hygiene, grooming, bathing and bedmaking, or elimination assistance to the patient
  • Implement feeding and nutrition interventions 
  • Accurately measure and record vital signs and other patient measurements
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures in a safe and effective manner
  • Safely transport and move patients
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing EKG and respiratory support skills
  • Provide skin and wound care 
  • Collect and handle specimens for laboratory testing 

Program Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Pass criminal background check, drug screen panel, and physical exam with documented proof of immunizations or titers

Program Length

  • 6 weeks virtual classwork at St. Charles Community College and onsite clinicals
  • 9-11 weeks onsite classwork and clinicals at St. Louis Community College

* Graduates are required to fulfill a 24-month work commitment after successful program completion. Failure to complete the 24-month work commitment requires reimbursement for the full cost of the program.
Program Selection Process

  • Complete SSM Health application and screening interview
  • Attend the PCT in person presentation
