STL Medical Assistant Training Program
Program Overview 

Become a Certified Medical Assistant in just two semesters! SSM Health partners with St. Louis Community College and St. Charles Community College to prepare
students for a career in health care as competent, multiskilled practitioners. This training prepares students for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certificate supported by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).


Program Objectives


  • Understand health care systems, medical law, and ethics to provide effective patient care
  • Develop administrative assisting and communication skills to support health care professionals and provide high-quality patient care
  • Apply patient care coordination, education, and general patient care techniques to meet the needs of patients with diverse medical conditions
  • Utilize testing, laboratory procedures, and knowledge of pathophysiology and disease processes to diagnose and treat patients
  • Implement infection control measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
  • Master phlebotomy, basic pharmacology, EKG, and cardiovascular testing procedures to administer medications, collect blood samples, and diagnose and monitor cardiovascular diseases

Program Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Pass criminal background check, drug screen panel, and physical exam with documented proof of immunizations or titers

Program Length

  • 2 semesters in length 
  • Students must be available Mon. - Fri. from 8 am - 4:30 pm 
  • Clinical practice hours are scheduled at assigned SSM Health locations​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Program Benefits

  • Tuition funding included*
  • Employed part-time as a Medical Assistant at SSM Health and receive pay plus full-time benefits during the training


* Graduates are required to fulfill a 24-month work commitment after successful program completion. Failure to complete the 24-month work commitment requires reimbursement for the full cost of the program.
Program Selection Process

  • Apply online at St. Louis Community College or St. Charles Community College and select the Medical Assistant program
  • Complete screening process with the college you selected 
  • Attend the MA online informational session with SSM Health 
  • Complete SSM Health application and screening interview
  • Program participants will be identified for the program and notified 
  • Register with the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry
  • Demonstrate academic and career readiness

  • You will work in our SSM Health St. Louis region medical group ambulatory clinics 

St. Charles Community College

  • You will work in our SSM Health St. Louis region medical group ambulatory clinics
