Program Overview


Research and evidence-based practice is an integral part of our Mission and professional practice at SSM Health. Team members recognize and embrace the professional obligation to provide care that is based in best evidence. EBP Fellows will serve as mentors for their project teams through project implementation. Upon completion of the EBP Fellowship Program, EBP Fellows will continue to serve as EBP Mentors and Champions within their home sites.


The first EBP Fellowship Cohort at SSM Health began January 2023. The 12-month graduate level program consists of 15 EBP Fellows supported by qualified mentors working on various EBP projects related to organizational strategic and KPI goals. SSM Health’s EBP Fellowship Program is recognized by The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP in Nursing and Healthcare at The Ohio State University.

 

Program Objectives

 
  • Ongoing development of a culture of clinical inquiry at SSM Health that enhances outcomes and experiences
  • Ongoing professional development and career advancement
  • Commitment to continuous improvement through education and participation of team members in interdisciplinary performance improvement efforts
  • National recognition as an organization where team members can reach their greatest potential and fulfill their calling in service to others
  • Gain a comprehensive overview of EBP and the principles of change management
  • Learn skills to plan, implement and sustain an EBP project using the Johns Hopkins EBP for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals Model and Toolkit

Program Eligibility

  • Current full-time or part-time SSM Health employees in an acute, post-acute, or ambulatory setting
  • Minimum of an Associate's degree
  • Complete required department orientation / any applicable residency program by January 2027 (if applicable)



Program Length

  • 12 months, may be extended up to 15 months if needed. 
  • 4 hours paid virtual class time per month (approved to provide 24 hours of accredited continuing education) 
  • 4 hours paid project work time per month (participants work in groups of 2 – 3 on projects)



Program Benefits

  • Receive mentoring throughout the program to complete a project and create podium and poster presentations
  • Opportunity to attend optional workshop on “Moving It To Manuscript”
  • Fulfill educational criteria for the EBP-CH Certification offered by The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP in Nursing and Healthcare

Program Selection Process


The 2027 EBP Fellowship Program application is now open. Team members from all care sites including acute, post-acute, and ambulatory settings are encouraged to apply by September 30 for the 2027 cohort.


Changes for the 2027 cohort:


  • Individual projects will no longer be accepted.
    • Participants are expected to work in teams with a recommended team size of 2-3 memebers and a minimum of 2 and a maxiumu of 5.
  • A bachelor's degree is no longer required to participate in teh SSM Health EBP Fellowship.
  • Application period opens on 8/24/2026 
  • Submit the Application Form by 10/5/2026
  • Submit the Leader Endorsement Form by 10/5/2026
  • Submit the Mentor Application by 10/5/2026 if you are not currently a mentor and are interested in being a mentor for the 2027 cohort.
  • Applications will be reviewed, scored, and selected using a defined scoring rubric.
  • Applicants will be notified of selections by 11/2/2026.
